  <p>The single most useful thing to understand about 6F5 is what layer it belongs in. Get that right and it saves real money. Get it wrong and you have a coarse, oversized material sitting where it cannot do its job.</p>

  <h2>Capping is not sub-base</h2>

  <p>A road, yard or hardstanding is built in layers. From the bottom up: the subgrade, which is whatever ground you have; then, if the subgrade is weak, a capping layer; then the sub-base; then whatever surfacing goes on top.</p>

  <p>Capping and sub-base do different jobs. Sub-base &#8211; usually <a href="https://www.totalwasteservicesltd.com/mot-type-1-explained/">Type 1</a> &#8211; is a well-graded material that compacts to a dense, load-spreading layer directly beneath the surfacing. Capping sits underneath it, and its job is to turn ground you cannot build on into a platform you can. It bridges soft spots, gives plant somewhere to run, and lets you reduce the sub-base thickness above it.</p>

  <p>6F5 is a capping material. It is not a sub-base and it is not a finished surface.</p>

  <h2>What 6F5 actually is</h2>

  <p>6F5 is a coarse recycled granular material, specified in the earthworks series of the Specification for Highway Works. In practice it is crushed construction and demolition arisings &#8211; concrete, brick, block, sometimes asphalt planings &#8211; processed and graded rather than simply dug out and tipped.</p>

  <p>The defining feature is particle size. 6F5 runs considerably coarser than Type 1, with a maximum size up around 125mm. That coarseness is exactly why it works as capping: large, angular pieces bridge and interlock over soft ground in a way a finer material cannot.</p>

  <p>It is also why it is useless where you need tolerance. You cannot screed to a level on 125mm lumps, and you cannot lay block paving or a slab directly on it.</p>

  <div class="tws-callout">
    <span class="tws-eyebrow">The distinction that matters</span>
    <p>6F2 and 6F5 are both coarse capping materials of similar size. The practical difference is source: 6F5 is the recycled classification. Where a spec permits 6F5, it is usually the cheaper of the two &#8211; so it is always worth asking which the engineer will actually accept before ordering 6F2 by habit.</p>
  </div>

  <h2>When capping is worth it</h2>

  <p>Capping earns its place when the subgrade is weak &#8211; broadly, when CBR values are low enough that building sub-base straight onto the ground would mean an uneconomic thickness, or would simply fail.</p>

  <p>The economics are straightforward. Capping material is cheaper per tonne than sub-base. If a capping layer lets you take significant depth out of the Type 1 above it, you have swapped expensive material for cheap material and come out ahead &#8211; while getting a more robust build and a working platform your plant can actually use during construction.</p>

  <p>Capping depth is a design decision, not a rule of thumb &#8211; it comes off the CBR value and the design traffic loading. Typical layers run from around 250mm on marginal ground up to 600mm where conditions are genuinely poor. If nobody has tested the ground, that is the thing to sort before ordering anything.</p>

  <h2>The paperwork question</h2>

  <p>Because 6F5 is recycled from demolition arisings, it carries a question that primary aggregate does not: what is actually in it.</p>

  <p>Properly produced 6F5 comes from a permitted facility, is processed to meet the grading, and is produced under a quality protocol so that it counts as a product rather than a waste. That matters both for compliance and for what happens on your site &#8211; material that has not been through that process can carry contaminants, and putting it in the ground makes it your problem.</p>

  <p>This is not a reason to avoid recycled material. It is a reason to know where yours comes from.     <span class="tws-eyebrow">Worth asking</span>
    <p>If a price for 6F5 looks unusually cheap, ask which facility it came from and what documentation comes with it. Unprocessed demolition rubble sold as capping is the cheapest material on the market and the most expensive mistake.</p>
  </div>

  <h2>Where people get it wrong</h2>

  <ul>
    <li><strong>Using 6F5 as sub-base</strong> &#8211; too coarse to compact to tolerance, and the surfacing above it will show it</li>
    <li><strong>Using it where no capping is needed</strong> &#8211; on decent ground it is an extra layer doing nothing</li>
    <li><strong>Ordering it because it&#8217;s cheap</strong> &#8211; without checking the spec permits recycled material for that layer</li>
    <li><strong>Laying it too thick per lift</strong> &#8211; coarse material still needs compacting in layers</li>
    <li><strong>Assuming all recycled crush is 6F5</strong> &#8211; graded, documented material and general hardcore are not the same product</li>
  </ul>

  <h2>Getting it to site</h2>

  <p>Capping is a volume material, so the constraint is usually haulage and access rather than availability. On a big platform it is worth phasing deliveries against the earthworks programme so you are not storing hundreds of tonnes on a site that has nowhere to put it.</p>

  <p>Ask ten people on site what MOT Type 1 is and you will get ten versions of &#8220;the grey crushed stuff that goes under everything&#8221;. Which is close enough to be useful and vague enough to cause problems &#8211; because Type 1 is a defined specification, not a generic description, and ordering the wrong thing means either paying over the odds or laying a sub-base that fails.</p>

  <h2>What MOT Type 1 actually is</h2>

  <p>MOT stands for Ministry of Transport, a department that has not existed since 1970. The name stuck. The material is now specified in the Specification for Highway Works, where it appears as a Type 1 unbound mixture under the Series 800 clauses.</p>

  <p>What matters in practice is the grading. Type 1 is a well-graded crushed material running from around 31.5mm down to dust, with every size in between. That range is the whole point: the smaller particles fill the voids between the larger ones, so when you compact it the material locks together into a dense, load-bearing layer rather than shifting about under load.</p>

  <p>It can be made from crushed rock, crushed concrete, crushed slag or other recycled aggregate. What it cannot be is a single-size stone, or a material with too many fines &#8211; the specification caps the very fine content to keep the layer free-draining and resistant to frost heave.</p>

  <div class="tws-callout">
    <span class="tws-eyebrow">The common mistake</span>
    <p>Asking for &#8220;Type 1&#8221; when what the job needs is capping. Type 1 is a sub-base. If your subgrade is soft, putting more Type 1 down is an expensive way to solve a problem that a capping layer solves for less.   <h2>Quarried or recycled?</h2>

  <p>Both can meet the Type 1 grading. Quarried Type 1 is crushed virgin rock &#8211; limestone or granite, depending on the source. Recycled Type 1 is typically crushed concrete processed to the same grading envelope.</p>

  <p>For a specified highway job, the engineer will usually call for a particular source and you follow the spec. For a driveway, a yard, a car park or a building slab, recycled Type 1 does the same job for less money, provided it is properly processed and graded rather than whatever came off the last demolition.</p>

  <p>The honest answer is that the difference is more often about paperwork and specification than performance. If nobody has specified virgin material, ask about recycled &#8211; it is usually the cheaper answer and we will tell you when it is not appropriate.</p>

  <h2>How deep does it need to be?</h2>

  <p>Depth is driven by what is going on top and what is underneath. These are the depths that cover most jobs, assuming a reasonable subgrade:</p>

  <p>Compact in layers, not in one go. Anything more than about 150mm should be laid and compacted in separate lifts &#8211; a roller or plate will not properly densify a 300mm dump in a single pass, and what you get is a firm crust over a loose middle that settles the first time something heavy drives on it.</p>

  <h2>Working out how much to order</h2>

  <p>Compacted Type 1 sits at roughly 2.1 tonnes per cubic metre. That gives a usable rule:</p>

  <ul>
    <li>One tonne covers about 4.8m&sup2; at 100mm compacted depth</li>
    <li>One tonne covers about 3.2m&sup2; at 150mm compacted depth</li>
    <li>One tonne covers about 2.4m&sup2; at 200mm compacted depth</li>
  </ul>

  <p>So a 60m&sup2; driveway at 150mm needs roughly 19 tonnes. Add around 10% for compaction losses and uneven formation and call it 21.</p>

  <div class="tws-callout">
    <span class="tws-eyebrow">Ordering tip</span>
    <p>Work in tonnes, not &#8220;loads&#8221;. A load means different things depending on whether a grab, an 8-wheel tipper or an artic turns up. Tell us the tonnage and the site access and we will work out what can physically get in.</p>

  <h2>Where Type 1 goes wrong</h2>

  <p>Four failures account for most of the problems we get called out to:</p>

  <ul>
    <li><strong>Laid too thick in one lift</strong> &#8211; looks compacted, is not, settles within months</li>
    <li><strong>Laid on unprepared formation</strong> &#8211; Type 1 spreads load, it does not fix soft ground</li>
    <li><strong>Contaminated with site spoil</strong> &#8211; clay worked into the sub-base destroys the drainage the grading was designed for. If the spoil coming out is questionable, get it <a href="https://www.totalwasteservicesltd.com/contaminated-soil-disposal/">tested and classified</a> before it goes anywhere near the build-up</li>
    <li><strong>Wrong material entirely</strong> &#8211; single-size stone or unscreened crush ordered because someone said &#8220;hardcore&#8221;</li>
  </ul>

  <h2>Getting it delivered</h2>

  <p>The practical constraints are usually access and timing rather than the material. A 20-tonne 8-wheel tipper needs room to tip; a restricted site may need smaller loads or a grab. Scheduled deliveries across a programme cost the same as one big drop and save you the stockpiling headache, which matters on a tight footprint.</p>

<p>Most people default to a skip because it's the thing they know. It sits there, you fill it, someone takes it away. Simple. And for plenty of jobs it's exactly right. But on a lot of commercial and construction work &ndash; especially anything involving muck, spoil or volume &ndash; a grab lorry does the same job faster, cheaper and with far less hassle. The trouble is nobody explains the difference, so people keep ordering skip after skip when one grab visit would have cleared the lot.</p>
<p>Here's the plain version.</p>

<h2>What a skip is good at</h2>
<p>A skip earns its place when waste builds up gradually and you need somewhere to put it over days or weeks. Fit-outs, strip-outs, general builders' waste, mixed rubbish that accumulates as a job runs &ndash; a skip on site means the crew has somewhere to throw things without stopping work.</p>
<p>It's the right call when:</p>
<ul>
<li>Waste is generated slowly, over time, rather than all at once</li>
<li>It's mixed general waste rather than one heavy material</li>
<li>You've got room to leave a container in place</li>
<li>The volume is modest &ndash; a few tonnes, not tens of tonnes</li>
</ul>
<p>Where a skip starts to cost you is when you're filling it with heavy spoil, or filling and swapping it repeatedly. That's the signal you've outgrown it.</p>

<h2>What a grab lorry is good at</h2>
<p>A grab lorry is a tipper with a hydraulic arm and grab bucket mounted on the back. It reaches over walls and fences, scoops material straight off the ground or out of a pile, loads itself, and drives away. No skip to position, no loading shovel needed, no waiting.</p>
<p>It comes into its own when:</p>
<ul>
<li>You've got heavy material &ndash; soil, clay, hardcore, muck, rubble</li>
<li>There's volume to shift &ndash; a grab holds far more than a builders skip</li>
<li>Access is tight and the arm can reach over an obstacle</li>
<li>You want it gone <em>today</em>, in one visit, not filled over a week</li>
</ul>

<p><b>The rule of thumb:</b> if you're putting heavy material into a skip, or you're on your third skip exchange, you almost certainly want a grab instead. One grab lorry typically carries the equivalent of two to three builders skips &ndash; and it loads itself, so you're not paying labour to barrow muck into a container.</p>

<h2>The cost difference nobody spells out</h2>
<p>On the face of it a skip looks cheaper &ndash; one price, one container. But that's only true if you fill it once. The moment you're exchanging skips repeatedly, the numbers change fast. Each skip carries its own delivery, collection and disposal cost, and heavy material fills one long before it's physically full &ndash; you hit the weight limit with the skip half empty.</p>
<p>A grab, by contrast, is priced on the load it takes away, and it takes a lot. For heavy or high-volume material, clearing it in one or two grab visits usually works out cheaper than the string of skips it would otherwise take &ndash; before you even count the labour saved not loading them by hand.</p>

<p><b>Worth knowing:</b> a grab that takes your muck away can often bring aggregate <em>back</em> on the same trip &ndash; backloading. Muck out, Type 1 in, one movement. That's a saving a skip simply can't offer.</p>

<h2>The quick decision guide</h2>
<ul>
<li><strong>Heavy spoil, soil, clay or hardcore?</strong> Grab &ndash; every time.</li>
<li><strong>Mixed general waste building up over a week?</strong> Skip.</li>
<li><strong>On your second or third skip already?</strong> Switch to a grab.</li>
<li><strong>Tight access, but a lorry can get within reach?</strong> Grab &ndash; the arm does the work.</li>
<li><strong>Need it cleared in one visit, today?</strong> Grab.</li>
<li><strong>Bringing material in as well as taking it out?</strong> Grab, and ask about backloading.</li>
</ul>

<h2>Or don't choose at all</h2>
<p>Plenty of sites need both &ndash; a skip for the general waste the crew generates day to day, and a grab for the muck and spoil when the dig starts.     <p>Ask three groundworkers what the difference is between Type 1, 6F2 and 6F5 and you&#8217;ll often get three answers &#8211; one confident, one vague, and one that&#8217;s simply &#8220;whatever the spec says.&#8221; The confusion costs money in both directions: people over-specify expensive primary stone where a capping layer would do, and occasionally under-specify where it genuinely matters.</p>

    <p>Here&#8217;s the plain-English version.</p>

    <h2>Type 1 (MOT Type 1) &#8211; the load-bearing sub-base</h2>

    <p>Type 1 is the workhorse. It&#8217;s a graded crushed stone &#8211; typically granite or limestone &#8211; engineered so the particle sizes range from about 40mm down to dust. That grading is the whole point: the fines pack into the voids between the larger stones, so when it&#8217;s compacted it locks up and becomes a dense, stable, load-bearing layer.</p>

    <p>It&#8217;s what goes directly beneath roads, car parks, hardstanding, footpaths, block paving and foundations &#8211; the layer that actually carries the load.</p>

        <span>PRIMARY / VIRGIN</span>
        <b>Quarried Type 1 (granite or limestone)</b>
        <p>Crushed virgin stone. Consistent, certified, and specified where the engineer wants a known quantity. Granite is harder and more durable; limestone is generally cheaper and beds in well.</p>
      </div>

        <span>RECYCLED</span>
        <b>Recycled Type 1</b>
        <p>Crushed concrete and masonry, graded to the same envelope. Performs well for most applications, costs less, and carries real sustainability weight on tendered and public-sector work. Increasingly the default where the spec allows it.</p>
      </div>

    <p>Where the spec permits recycled, it&#8217;s usually the sensible call &#8211; you get the performance at a lower cost, and it helps on the recycled-content targets that come with a lot of tendered work these days.</p>

    <h2>6F2 &#8211; the capping layer</h2>

    <p>6F2 is a coarser, cheaper capping material. It&#8217;s a graded fill &#8211; larger particle sizes than Type 1, typically up to around 125mm &#8211; and it&#8217;s not a load-bearing sub-base. It&#8217;s what you put <em>underneath</em> the sub-base when the ground beneath is weak.</p>

    <p>Its job is to bridge poor ground: it provides a working platform, spreads the load, and gets you a stable surface to build the proper sub-base on top of. It&#8217;s also frequently used for temporary haul roads and site access tracks, where you need something workable underfoot but don&#8217;t need engineered performance.</p>

    <div class="tws-callout">
      <p><b>The expensive mistake:</b> using Type 1 where 6F2 would do. If you&#8217;re capping soft ground or laying a temporary haul road, you&#8217;re paying a significant premium per tonne for engineered stone that&#8217;s doing a job cheaper fill would do just as well. On a large site, that difference adds up fast.</p>
    </div>

    <h2>6F5 &#8211; the coarser cousin</h2>

    <p>6F5 is similar in purpose to 6F2 &#8211; a capping and fill material &#8211; but coarser again, with a larger maximum particle size. It&#8217;s used where you need bulk fill and a robust working platform over particularly poor ground, and where the finer grading of 6F2 isn&#8217;t necessary.</p>

    <p>In practice, the choice between 6F2 and 6F5 often comes down to what the engineer has specified and what&#8217;s economically available locally. They do broadly the same job; 6F5 is the chunkier option.</p>

    <h2>The quick decision guide</h2>

    <ul>
      <li><strong>Load-bearing layer under a road, car park, slab or paving?</strong> Type 1.</li>
      <li><strong>Bridging soft or weak ground before you lay the sub-base?</strong> 6F2 or 6F5.</li>
      <li><strong>Temporary haul road or site access track?</strong> 6F2 &#8211; don&#8217;t waste Type 1 on it.</li>
      <li><strong>Spec allows recycled?</strong> Take it. Same job, lower cost, better sustainability credentials.</li>
      <li><strong>Engineer has specified a particular grade?</strong> Follow the spec &#8211; this guide helps you understand it, not override it.</li>
    </ul>

    <h2>A word on cost</h2>

    <p>Roughly speaking, the cost hierarchy runs: recycled Type 1 &lt; 6F2/6F5 &lt; quarried limestone Type 1 &lt; quarried granite Type 1 &#8211; though local availability moves this around considerably. Haulage distance matters too: a quarry twenty miles further away can wipe out the saving on the stone itself.</p>

    <p>That&#8217;s precisely why buying through an independent helps.       <p><b>One more saving worth knowing:</b> if you&#8217;re shifting spoil off site as well as bringing material in, backloading &#8211; taking muck out and bringing stone back on the same vehicle movement &#8211; meaningfully cuts your haulage bill. It&#8217;s one of the easiest savings on a groundworks job and it&#8217;s routinely missed.</p>

    <p>Muck away sounds simple: dig it, load it, take it away. And when the ground is clean, it more or less is.     <p>&#8220;Muck away&#8221; is the removal of excavated material from site &#8211; soil, clay, subsoil, hardcore, mixed spoil &#8211; and its disposal at a facility that&#8217;s licensed to accept it. That last part is the bit that matters. Anyone can move soil. The question is whether the place it ends up is legally allowed to take it, and whether you&#8217;ve got the paperwork to prove it.</p>

    <p>The material typically leaves site by <a href="/muck-away-grab-hire/">grab lorry or tipper</a>, depending on access and volume. But before anything moves, the material needs a classification.</p>

    <h2>The three classifications, in plain English</h2>

    <p>Every load of excavated material falls into one of three buckets. Which bucket it&#8217;s in determines where it can go &#8211; and what it costs you.</p>

        <span>CHEAPEST TO DISPOSE OF</span>
        <b>Inert</b>
        <p>Clean, unreactive material &#8211; natural subsoil, clay, stone, concrete, brick. It won&#8217;t break down, dissolve or leach anything nasty. It goes to inert landfill or, better, to a recycling facility where it&#8217;s processed back into secondary aggregate.</p>

        <span>MID-RANGE</span>
        <b>Non-hazardous</b>
        <p>Material that&#8217;s contaminated, but not badly enough to be classified as hazardous. Common on brownfield and made ground &#8211; old fill, mixed arisings, low-level impacted soil. It needs a permitted non-hazardous facility, which costs more per tonne than inert.</p>

        <span>MOST EXPENSIVE</span>
        <b>Hazardous</b>
        <p>Material where contaminant levels exceed the hazardous thresholds &#8211; heavy metals, hydrocarbons, asbestos, chemical residues. It has to go to a facility specifically permitted for hazardous waste, and it moves under a consignment note. This is where costs climb steeply.</p>

    <p>Here&#8217;s the thing most people don&#8217;t realise: <strong>the same-looking pile of muck can fall into any of those three categories.</strong> You cannot tell by eye. Which brings us to testing.</p>

    <h2>What WAC testing is, and when you need it</h2>

    <p>WAC stands for <strong>Waste Acceptance Criteria</strong>. It&#8217;s the set of thresholds a landfill or treatment facility uses to decide whether it can legally accept your material.</p>

    <p>A WAC test is a laboratory analysis of a representative sample of your soil. It measures what&#8217;s actually in the material and, crucially, what would <em>leach</em> out of it. The results tell you which classification the soil falls into, and therefore which facilities can take it.</p>

    <h3>When you need it</h3>
    <ul>
      <li>Any brownfield or previously developed site</li>
      <li>Made ground or historic fill of unknown origin</li>
      <li>Anywhere with a former industrial, fuel, chemical or landfill use</li>
      <li>When the material looks, smells or behaves oddly &#8211; a sheen, a solvent smell, unusual staining</li>
      <li>When a receiving facility asks for it (many will not take a load without one)</li>
    </ul>

    <h3>When you probably don&#8217;t</h3>
    <ul>
      <li>Clean, natural, undisturbed subsoil or clay from a greenfield site with no contamination history</li>
    </ul>

      <p><b>The false economy to avoid:</b> skipping testing to save a few hundred pounds, then having loads rejected at the gate, re-handled, re-tested and re-routed. A rejected load doesn&#8217;t just cost the tip fee &#8211; it costs the haulage, the delay, and the disruption to your dig. Testing up front is almost always the cheaper path.</p>

    <h2>What actually drives the cost</h2>

    <p>Contractors are often surprised that two apparently similar jobs are priced very differently. Four things move the number:</p>

    <h3>1. Classification</h3>
    <p>By far the biggest factor. Gate fees rise sharply from inert to non-hazardous to hazardous. Getting the classification right &#8211; and not over-classifying out of caution &#8211; is where real money is saved.</p>

    <h3>2. Haulage distance</h3>
    <p>Not to the nearest tip &#8211; to the nearest tip <em>that&#8217;s licensed to take your material</em>. Hazardous facilities are far thinner on the ground than inert ones, so a hazardous classification can mean a much longer round trip.</p>

    <h3>3. Volume and access</h3>
    <p>Whether it&#8217;s a grab lorry squeezing into a tight urban plot or bulk artics running off an open site changes the cost per tonne considerably.</p>

    <h3>4. Backloading</h3>
    <p>This one&#8217;s within your control. If you&#8217;re taking muck out <em>and</em> bringing <a href="/bulk-aggregate-supply/">aggregate</a> in, running both on the same vehicle movement cuts your haulage bill significantly. It&#8217;s one of the simplest savings available on a groundworks job, and it&#8217;s routinely missed.</p>

    <h2>What to do the moment you suspect contamination</h2>

    <ul>
      <li><strong>Stop moving the material.</strong> Don&#8217;t mix suspect spoil with clean arisings &#8211; you&#8217;ll turn a small problem into a large one by contaminating the whole stockpile.</li>
      <li><strong>Segregate and cover it.</strong> Keep it separate, keep it contained, keep rainwater out of it.</li>
      <li><strong>Get it sampled and tested.</strong> Representative sampling, WAC analysis, proper classification.</li>
      <li><strong>Don&#8217;t guess.</strong> Assuming it&#8217;s fine risks an illegal deposit; assuming the worst risks paying hazardous rates for non-hazardous soil.</li>
      <li><strong>Keep the paperwork.</strong> Waste transfer notes on everything; consignment notes where the material is hazardous.</li>
    </ul>
